State board postpones hearings on proposed artificial sweetener ban.

Questions on whether the state Environmental Improvement Board has the legal authority to look into the safety of aspartame, an artificial sweetener found in some 6,000 manufactured food products, has delayed hearings that were scheduled for July, according to a story in today's Albuquerque Journal. The story is available online for free.

Stephen Fox, a Santa Fe gallery owner who has lobbied the Legislature on health issues, has waged a tireless campaign to get the product banned despite its approval by the Food and Drug Administration. Fox maintains that aspartame is a "neurotoxic food additive" that metabolizes in the body into formaldehyde, causing "untold neurological damage to millions of Americans."

Fox's thoughts on the subject were published as a guest editorial in the Mountain View Telegraph in November. It was the fifth most e-mailed story of the year from ABQjournal.com.
