Famous ascent anniversary today.

In 1953: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are the first climbers to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth. They are standing 29,028 feet above sea level.

A beekeeper by profession, Hillary became enamored of mountain climbing while growing up in New Zealand. By the time he felt ready to tackle Everest, Hillary had traveled the world and made 11 climbs of over 20,000 feet.

Here is a great site to keep tabs of what is happening on Everest right now.
