Lighting cause of fire near campground, Forest Service says
The Jemez Falls Fire within the Jemez Falls
Campground, approximately 4 miles northeast of Jemez Springs, NM has been
fully contained. Right now firefighters are working on controlling the fire
by cooling down all hot spots that are near the control line.

Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers have determined that the fire
was caused by lightning, not human caused. Since the fire started in the
campground, firefighters were suspecting that the fire was caused by a
human, until they found the tree with a fresh lightning strike this
morning.

The 52-unit Jemez Falls Campground used for picnicking, fishing, hiking,
and camping will be closed until further notice. “The rest of the
campgrounds and picnic areas managed by the Jemez Ranger District are still
open and we encourage visitors to come out and safely enjoy the Jemez
Mountains,” said Acting District Ranger Mary Bean.
