Las Cruces woman gets one year probation

The woman charged twice with hoarding cats, after 73 were killed in a fire and 21 more found inside her workplace, was sentenced Monday.

Marilyn Davis told the Sun-News she has pleaded no contest to the charges of failing to provide proper care and maintenance and one count of violating her kennel license.

Davis said she was sentenced Monday to one year probation and 500 hours community service. She will not have to pay any fines other than court costs.

Davis has maintained that she had a large number of cats because she cared about them and that not all animal hoarders are crazy.

She had worked as an office manager at the time she was charged.

Most of the cats taken from her were euthanized, but she said she is being allowed to keep two cats, after they are spayed, which she said she has to pay for.
