Two people were killed Friday afternoon when the pickup truck they were traveling in rear-ended a semi-truck on Interstate 40 near Sedillo Hill, police said.

Authorities closed the eastbound lanes of the freeway between the Sedillo Hill and Zuzax exits immediately after the accident, which happened about 3:30 p.m., Lt. Scott Baird of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department tells ABQJournal.com

Baird did not know the ages or genders of the two victims. He said no one in the semi was injured.

Investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash, and there are no indications in the preliminary stages of the investigation that alcohol was involved, Baird told ABQJournal.com.

Police are diverting drivers stuck between the two exits onto NM 66, then back onto I-40 past Sedillo Hill, he said.

"The freeway will be closed for an extended period of time while our traffic guys conduct their investigation," Baird told ABQJournal.com.
