State investigating fatal plunge at I-40, Coors overpass.
New Mexico's Occupational Health and Safety Bureau is investigating the death of a construction worker at the new interchange being constructed at Interstate 40 and Coors Boulevard NW, the state OSHA bureau chief said. "Investigators are arriving on the scene right about now," bureau chief Butch Tongate said just a few minutes ago. The driver of a steamroller was pronounced dead at the scene after the roller fell some 35 feet from an off-ramp at the interchange around 3 a.m. today, said Capt. Mike Paiz of the Albuquerque Fire Department. The man, whose name hasn't been released yet pending notification of family, was not pinned under the roller but apparently died of head injuries, according to Paiz. Tongate said the state's Occupational Health and Safety Bureau tries to stay aware of any fatality that occurs during work, but doesn't necessarily investigate all fatalities. "Our purpose is to determine whether any violation of OSHA standards has occurred" during a workplace fatality, said Tongate, who said his bureau was notified of the incident by Albuquerque police.
