Extra socks, cocoa butter, baby powder don't work for Las Cruces woman, 20.

It was back in court Monday for 20-year-old Anita Rachelle Thomas who allegedly used a combination of baby powder, cocoa butter oil and six pairs of socks in an unsuccessful attempt to escape from the Dona Ana County Detention Center last week, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Thomas was being transported to magistrate court for a hearing last Tuesday when she allegedly used six pairs of socks to ease her way out of leg restraints, cocoa butter to better slip out of leg restraints and handcuffs, then threw baby powder in the face of officers as she tried to dash to freedom, the Sun-News said.

But she only got a couple of feet before officers subdued her, using pepper spray and the threat of using a Tazer, Dona Ana County sheriff's investigators told the Sun-News.

One officer had to draw his weapon, but no shots were fired during the escape attempt, sheriff's investigator Bo Nevarez said.

Thomas now faces three counts of attempted escape from jail and one count of battery on a peace officer -- with two of the charges coming from an alleged earlier escape attempt, the Sun-News said.

Investigators on June 30 found that some mortar had been removed from around a cinder block in a cell occupied by Thomas at the detention center, the Sun-News said.

When investigators went to her new cell at the jail on Monday, they found more mortar removed from around a cinder block and concealed with toothpaste, evidence they believe of another escape attempt, the paper reported.

She remains in custody -- for now.
