Famous men like Edgar Allan Poe, 197 years old today.

He was the first American to write a detective story, the first to write horror stories, and the first to be admired more by the French than by his more philistine countrymen -- the head of a long line that includes Jerry Lewis, Woody Allen and John Kerry.

And speaking of John Kerry, today is also the second anniversary of Howard Dean's famous "scream," the one that allegedly torpedoed the former Vermont governor's chances to become president following the Iowa caucuses in 2004.

If memory serves, the scream came just after Dean mentioned New Mexico (always looking for that local angle).
