Winter weather hits NE New Mexico; some schools delayed.
A fast-moving winter storm dropped snow on parts of New Mexico, and the National Weather Service put up winter weather advisories for Union, Colfax, parts of Mora and San Miguel counties this morning. Interstate 25 through the Raton Pass is snowpacked and icy, and travel is being discouraged on U.S. 64 between Tierra Amarilla and Tres Piedras. Two-hour delays are being reported for Penasco Independent Schools, Raton Public Schools, Tohatchi Public Schools, as well as Twin Lakes Elementary and Lake Valley Navajo Schools in McKinley County, according to broadcast reports this morning. For up-to-date information on road conditions, go here to the New Mexico Department of Transportation's Web site or call 1-800-432-4269. 6:30am UPDATE: More school delays and highway condition reports can be found here on KOAT-TV's Web sit, thenewmexicochannel.com. KOB-TV is also reporting on its Web site that blowing snow in southwest New Mexico caused the closure of U.S. 180 between Deming and Silver City overnight, and N.M. 11 between Deming and Columbus was closed because of blowing wind and low visibility. Both roads have since reopened, according to KFOX-TV in El Paso and Las Cruces. 7:20am UPDATE: The National Weather Service has taken down its winter weather advisory for northern New Mexico as the hit-and-run storm moves quickly out of the state, according to this report just posted by The Associated Press.
