Letter to girlfriend leads to escapee's Farmington arrest.
It's not exactly like showing a photo ID with your current address while you're holding up a bank, but it's close. Chad Ryan Kole, 21, walked away from a minimum security halfway house in Durango, Colo., earlier this month, but was arrested again in Farmington this week through a letter he sent to his girlfriend, the Farmington Daily Times reported today on its Web site. Kole, who had been serving a 3-year term for felony menacing, walked away from the minimum-security Hilltop House in Durango on Jan. 3, the paper reported. Apparently that's not hard to do, the Daily Times reported, since doors aren't locked and windows aren't barred at Hilltop House. But in an act of stunning insouciance -- or just plain dumbness -- Kole wrote a letter to his girlfriend on Tuesday giving her permission to pick up money in his account at Hilltop House, which he obviously was in no position to withdraw himself, the paper reported. The girlfriend showed up with the letter on Wednesday, and Hilltop House authorities learned their runaway resident was living in Farmington, so they notified the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, who in turn notified Farmington police, the Daily Times said. Police contacted Kole's mother, who spilled the beans that her son was staying at National 9 Inn in Farmington, and Kole was arrested there, the paper said. According to the Daily Times, Kole won't return to Hilltop House and remains in custody at the San Juan County Jail, and the girlfriend herself may be facing charges.
