Pianist, music instructor fell 15 feet from mountain trail

Melba Halamicek, 65, died from injuries she received Saturday afternoon from the Dripping Springs trail in the Organ Mountains, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

It was the second fatal accident in a year on the same trail -- 21-year-old Richard Odom of Las Cruces took a similar fall last May, the Sun-News reported.

Halamicek had been hiking with a friend, who called for help after the fall occurred around 2 p.m. Saturday, State Police spokesman Lt. Jimmy Glascock told the paper.

Efforts to recover her body took several hours, according to local broadcast reports.

Halamicek was faculty pianist and piano instructor at New Mexico State University, the El Paso/Las Cruces television station KFOX reported on its Web site.
