Smoke, flames visible for 4 miles in early-morning blaze.

A fire in a residential neighborhood on the 1200 block of Camino de la Tierra in Corrales was quickly subdued after being reported close to 1 a.m. today, and no one -- including the 25 or so firefighters who responded -- was injured, said Corrales Fire Chief Anthony Martinez.

The fire began in a backyard shed, then spread to what was described as an art design studio located in a detached garage, destroying both buildings and two nearby vehicles, Martinez said.

A couple of nearby homes were threatened, but Corrales firefighters -- aided by tankers from Placitas, Algodones and Rio Rancho and personnel from Sandoval County and Rio Rancho fire departments -- got the fire under control quickly. But they spent about four hours mopping up this morning, Martinez said.

Martinez said that as he responded to the call, smoke and flame were visible about 4 miles away.

Cause of the fire is still unknown, and the state Fire Marshal's Office will assist in the investigation, Martinez said.
