Police report up to 10 "smash and grab" incidents in a week.
Thieves have punched out windows of cars parked in and around the New Mexico State University campus in Las Cruces and taken whatever they can grab -- including backpacks, wallets and purses, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported today in its online edition. NMSU Police Lt. Ruben Barreras told the Sun-News there have been five to 10 such incidents in the past week and that some of the burglaries have occurred in broad daylight with students around. Barreras said he believes some students have witnessed the burglaries but have not come forward, and he urged anyone with information to call campus police at (505) 646-3311. In the meantime, police are urging anyone who parks in the campus area not to leave belongings in plain sight inside the car but to lock them away in the trunk or glove compartment, if possible.
