Infection found in eight New Mexico counties; five in Dona Ana County alone.
The New Mexico Department of Health announced today that 15 new cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed in eight counties, bringing the total of human cases found in the state so far this year to 42, with two fatalities, according to a news release. There were just eight cases, including one fatality, in New Mexico in all of 2006, and the state already has surpassed the 33 cases (two of them fatal) reported in 2005, the news release said. The new cases have been found as follows: Dona Ana County: Five cases, including a 10-year-old boy and a 58-year-old woman with West Nile fever; and a 74-year-old man, a 90-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man with West Nile encephalitis. Bernalillo County: Three cases, including a 72-year-old woman and a 57-year-old woman with West Nile fever, and a 59-year-old man with West Nile encephalitis. San Juan County: Two cases, including a 40-year-old man with West Nile meningitis who has been discharged from the hospital and a 48-year-old man with West Nile encephalitis who remains hospitalized. And one case each in Sierra County (an 87-year-old man with West Nile encephalitis); Chaves County ( a 3-year-old boy with West Nile fever); McKinley County (a 72-year-old woman with West Nile encephalitis); Valencia County (an 82-year-old woman with West Nile encephalitis); and Torrance County (a 47-year-old woman with West Nile meningitis).
