Las Cruces man struck as he walked away from rollover.

Jim Hernandez, 38, of Las Cruces, was westbound on Interstate 10 near the interchange with I-25 when his 1990 Chevrolet Astro van rolled over around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Then, about 15 minutes later and about a mile from the site of the rollover, Hernandez was struck and killed by a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by another man from Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported today on its Web site.

Witnesses told police they saw Hernandez walking in the right lane of westbound I-10 before he was struck, but police said they had no idea why he wandered into traffic or what caused the original rollover, the Sun-News reported.

Police investigators said they had no evidence the driver of the pickup, who was interviewed and released, was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, nor did they have any indication that Hernandez had been driving under the influence, but said they would wait for toxicology reports to make a final determination, the paper reported.
