21-year-old clings to life; brother, 17, in custody.
Shawna Shields, 21, remains hospitalized in critical condition at University of New Mexico Hospital at this hour, following overnight surgery, after she was shot in the back of the head around 2 a.m. at her northwest Albuquerque home, Albuquerque police said. Shields' 17-year-old brother was taken into custody but is too intoxicated to talk to police until this afternoon, said Albuquerque Police Department spokeswoman Trish Hoffman. The brother's name is being withheld for the present time, Hoffman said. Hoffman said a revolver was found at the scene, and that the shooting was possibly accidental. The shooting was reported around 2 a.m. today at a home on the 9100 block of Santa Catalina NW, which is near the intersection of Los Volcanes and Unser Boulevard NW.
6:40am -- Shooting in NW ABQ: Woman in critical condition after being shot in head.
A 21-year-old woman was shot in the back of the head and was rushed to University of New Mexico Hospital where she just underwent surgery, KOAT-TV is reporting. A suspect, believed to be a family member, is in custody and is undergoing questioning, KOAT-TV reported. The shooting at a home in the 9100 block of Santa Catalina NW, near Unser Boulevard south of Interstate 40, was reported around 2 a.m., the station reported. 8:20am UPDATE: Although Albuquerque Police Department homicide detectives are on the scene, the shooting may have been accidental, said APD spokeswoman Trish Hoffman. The person who did the shooting may have been the victim's brother, who is under 18, Hoffman said. More details to follow.
