Third big-name N.M. Republican has opted out of a bid for the U.S. Senate.

State Land Commissioner Patrick Lyons, in a brief telephone interview with the Journal this morning, said he's decided against a 2008 run for the Senate seat being vacated next year by longtime Sen. Pete Domenici. Domenici will not to seek a seventh term as he fights a progressive and incurable brain disease.

"We feel like it's a crowded field. If I get in, it'll be the top three Republicans," Lyons said.

His announcement comes a day after news broke that 2nd Congressional District Rep. Steve Pearce would challenge 1st District Rep. Heather Wilson for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat.

For more details on Lyons' announcement and an overview of the race as it stands today, check out Thursday's Journal.
