Deming 16-year-old was passenger in early Monday crash.

Richard A. Saenz Jr., 16, was ejected from a 1997 Chevy Cavalier driven by Johan Rivera, 17, and died at the scene early Monday, the Deming Headlight reported today on its Web site.

According to State Police, Rivera's car was racing a 1997 Ford truck driven by Fabian Barrera, 18, eastward on Cedar Street in Deming around 1 a.m. Monday when Rivera lost control and crashed, the Headlight reported.

Barrera and a passenger in his pickup, 16-year-old Aaron Saenz, were uninjured, and Rivera was treated and released at Mimbres Memorial Hospital, the paper reported.

All four participants in the race were from Deming. Alcohol was not a factor and no citations were immediately issued, but the investigation is continuing, police told the paper.

It was Luna County's third road fatality this year, the Headlight reported.
