Howard Hughes pilots plane on this day in 1947

The Hughes Flying Boat--the largest aircraft ever built -- piloted by designer Howard Hughes  made its first and only flight on this day, according to the History Channel.

Hughes, was an eccentric aviation and film producer and director, among other things. And he was one of the wealthiest people in the world.

He set multiple air speed records and produced such moves as "Hell's Angels" and "The Outlaw."

He died in 1976, on an airplane enroute to a hospital in Houston.
