Governor Bill Richardson declares Wednesday “New Mexico Diabetes Awareness Day.”
Diabetes is a growing problem throughout the world, in the U.S. and in New Mexico. Approximately 150,300 New Mexicans (1 in 10) have diabetes, and 74 percent know they have it. This is important because diabetes requires strict self management, according to a press release issued today by the governor's office. People who don’t know they have diabetes are less likely to control their blood sugar (through physical activity, healthy eating and medication), get an annual dilated eye exam, and check their feet for cuts and sores. Those preventive health behaviors can greatly reduce their risk for developing complications such as, blindness and kidney disease. The state has several programs to help diabetics and their families. Call 1-888-523-2966 or go to www.diabetesnm.org for information on them.
