About 150 firefighters are spending Thanksgiving Day battling the Ojo Peak fire, which has covered an estimated 7,500 acres near Manzano and Punta de Agua.
"We didn't have any big wind events overnight, which was very fortunate, so the size of the fire has held at 7,500 acres," Dana Howlett, a Cibola National Forest representative, said this morning. "They've been able to really work on buttoning up that northeast side of the perimeter of the fire, and they're working along the southeast, south and west sides of this morning." Howlett said about 150 firefighters "were on the fire," working in cold conditions. "We haven't had any significant precipitation, but we're hoping for some," Howlett said. Area residents evacuated earlier because of the fire have not yet been allowed to go back to their homes. Most of the evacuees last night found refuge with friends and family.
