Gov. says foreign nationals must show two IDs.

Gov. Bill Richardson today ordered that foreign nationals will have to produce two types of identification when they apply for driver's licenses in New Mexico -- one that includes a U.S. federal ID number and a passport issued by the country of citizenship, according to a news release from the Governor's Office.

Currently, foreign nationals need only show one type of identification in order to obtain a driver's license, such as a tax identification number, a foreign passport or a document issued by the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque or El Paso known as a matricula consular, the release said.

By requiring additional identification, the Governor's Office said in the release, the state is raising the standards for ensuring the identities of foreign nationals who wish to get a driver's license in New Mexico.

The governor also ordered that the state Taxation and Revenue Department conduct an audit of records to determine whether driver's licenses issued to foreign nationals under current law were obtained with authentic documents, the release said.
