Police: Driver likely fell asleep at the wheel.

A `97 Chevy Suburban from Oklahoma carrying 12 people rolled over on N.M. 599 near the west frontage road of Interstate 25 near Santa Fe around 4:55 a.m. today, killing four and injuring eight, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Capt. Terence Delgado told ABQjournal.com.

The driver was southbound on N.M. 599 when he "most likely fell asleep" and drifted off onto the right shoulder of the road, then "woke up in a panic" and tried to overcorrect, causing the van to flip, Delgado said.

All 12 people -- 11 men and one woman -- were thrown from the van, and four were killed at the scene, Delgado said.

Of the eight who survived the rollover, seven, including the one woman aboard, were taken to St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, and one was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, Delgado said.

Although some broadcast reports said the vehicle's occupants were "Mexican nationals," Delgado said no names or addresses were available yet.

N.M. 599, the Santa Fe relief route, was closed in both directions from Airport Road to the west frontage road at I-25.
