ABQ Marine Pfc. Robert Lopez Buried Today at Arlington.
One of 12 Marines whose remains were identified this summer from a battlefield in Vietnam, Lopez is being buried today at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. A Rio Grande High School graduate, Lopez was 19 when he and 11 others from his Marine platoon were killed in a 10-hour battle on May 10, 1968, near what was then the border between North and South Vietnam. For 37 years, Lopez was among the 1,800 American servicemen still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. Although his remains were discovered in 1999, they were not identified until this summer. A memorial service was held in August for Lopez at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Albuquerque. Five of those identified returned to their families for burial, while the remains of Lopez and six others in his platoon are being buried as a group today at Arlington. For a full account of the long-ago battle and its aftermath, see this posting from the P.O.W. Network.
