Services set for 11 a.m. today at Capitol for Ben Altamirano -- flags are at half-staff through sundown Thursday.

Senate President Pro Tem Ben Altamirano will be memorialized at 11 a.m. at the state Capitol.

His body will lie in the Capitol Rotunda from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, said Saturday.
Altamirano died at his home in Silver City on Thursday. He was 77.
The family was still awaiting official word on the cause of death, Sanchez said. In recent years, Altamirano had suffered a heart attack, for which he underwent surgery. He had also been hospitalized for a heart attack in 1981.
A rosary for Altamirano is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in his hometown of Silver City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, also at St. Vincent.
Altamirano, the longest-serving member of the New Mexico Legislature, had represented Senate District 28— which encompasses most of Catron, Grant, and Socorro counties— since 1971.
