Joins Texas lawmen to testify on border security problems.

Dona Ana County Sheriff Todd Garrison is in Washington, D.C., today and Thursday to testify about border security problems before Senate and House subcommittees, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported today on its Web site.

Garrison and an Arizona sheriff have been asked to join the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition as the coalition testifies today before the Senate's immigration, border security and citizenship subcommittee about violence from drug smugglers and immigrant traffickers along the border, the El Paso Times reported on its Web site.

A spokesman for subcommittee chairman Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told the El Paso Times that the hearing -- titled "Federal Strategies To End Border Violence" -- "will be a starting point for the debate" over several competing immigration-reform and border security bills now facing the U.S. Senate.

The border lawmen will meet privately today with Homeland Security Department officials and are scheduled to discuss rising violence in U.S. communities near the border with Mexico at a House subcommittee hearing on Thursday, according to the Sun-News.

Garrison told the Las Cruces paper he plans to discuss problems unique to New Mexico, including the increasing impact of drug and immigrant smuggling as border security tightens up in other border regions as well as the need for more law enforcement personnel.
