Good news, eastbound Paseo del Norte drivers. Transportation officials now say that Paseo between Second Street and Jefferson should reopen at about 8 p.m. tonight. It was originally set to reopen at 5 a.m. Sunday. "They're letting the paving cool," DOT district spokesman Phil Gallegos said just before 7 p.m. "We had a good run, no quirks. No surprises -- nothing like last week, where we didn't know exactly what we were going to run into when we got down there," Gallegos said. "It was just a matter of going down as deep as we had to to get out whatever saturated dirt was in there, and we were able to do that." The eastbound area had been shut since 8 p.m. Friday. Crews needed to repair the road after a waterline break occurred under the westbound lanes last weekend. The break closed the westbound lanes of the major east-west road for three days and necessitated the repair of the adjacent eastbound lanes. Crews with the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority a week ago dug up a chunk of Paseo del Norte so that repairs could be made to a 16-inch concrete pipe that had crumbled beneath the road. The cause of the break seems to be corrosion, according to the authority. Water from the leak saturated the ground, and a sinkhole formed in the road.
