Legislation to create legal domestic partnerships in New Mexico could be dead for the session, the Journal's Trip Jennings reports from the Capitol Saturday morning. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 6-4 to table the measure that would give gay and lesbian couples, as well as unmaried straight couples, the rights and benefits of traditionally married couples. Advocates say they will continue to push for the legislation before the New Mexico lawmaking session adjourns Feb. 14. But Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, a supporter of the legislation and one of the votes against tabling in the judiciary committee on Saturday, said the bill probably is dead. Gov. Bill Richardson, who wants the legislation, said he he was disappointed by the committee vote and urged a vote of the full Senate on the measure, which the House already has passed.
