Rollover east of Tucumcari in early February killed California couple.
A rollover accident on westbound Interstate 40 around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, about 10 miles east of Tucumcari resulted in the deaths of a Fresno, Calif., couple, Elmer Leon Capps and Alma Lorene Capps, whose ages were both listed as 78, according to an accident report filed by the New Mexico State Police. Elmer Capps, who was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while Alma Capps, who was in the front passenger seat but not wearing a seatbelt, suffered severe chest injuries in the crash, according to the report. She was alert and talking to the ambulance crew who arrived at the scene but later died from injuries sustained in the crash, the report said. A passenger, Ronnie Duncan, listed as 36 years old, from Colusa, Calif., was asleep in the back seat of the 2002 Crown Victoria sedan, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car with minor injuries, the report said. Elmer Capps, 78, of Fresno, Calif., was driving westbound on Interstate 40 on Sunday when his 2002 Crown Victoria drifted off the right shoulder, and Capps overcorrected, sending the car across both lanes into the median where it rolled over, State Police Lt. Cleo Baker told the Quay County Sun. Capps died at the scene, about 10 miles east of Tucumcari, while passenger Elma Capps, 78 and also of Fresno, was taken to a hospital in Amarillo where she died from her injuries, Baker told the paper. Another passenger, 51-year-old Ronny Duncan of Escondido, Calif., was treated for his injuries at the hospital and released, the Sun reported. The driver and passengers all were wearing seatbelts, Baker said.
