Las Cruces man allegedly threatened motorcycle shop workers over a helmet.

Joseph Torres, 50, of Las Cruces got into an argument Friday afternoon with workers at Barnett Harley-Davidson over a helmet he had purchased, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Witnesses told police that Torres then threatened employees with a handgun, but while flashing the gun, he accidentally shot himself in the foot, the Sun-News said.

His injury was not life-threatening, the paper reported.

But he was charged with one count of attempted armed robbery and was taken to the Dona Ana County Detention Center, the Sun-News said.

Detectives are still investigating the case and say further charges are pending, the paper said.
