2-year-old daughter hospitalized since mid-February with second-degree burns.

Alicia Dean, 32, is being held at the Roosevelt County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash-only bond, after being arrested Friday on a charge of first-degree child abuse with great bodily harm, the Portales News Tribune reported.

Dean's 2-year-old daughter has been hospitalized in Lubbock since Feb. 14, suffering from second-degree burns which will require skin grafts and other operations to correct the damage, the News Tribune reported.

Sheriff's officers began investigating the incident after Dean took her daughter to the emergency room of Roosevelt General Hospital with severe burns on her buttocks and the back of her lower legs, the paper said.

Investigators said Dean told authorities that the child, while unattended, climbed into a bathtub as it was filling with hot water, according to the News Tribune.

But Roosevelt County Sheriff Darren Hooker said in a news release that Dean's explanation was inconsistent with the child's injuries, but an investigation found that the child has soiled herself and was being put in the bath in order to clean her up, the News Tribune said.

The child was placed in the custody of the state Children, Youth and Families Department because of the injuries, and three of Dean's other children were placed in the CYFD's custody during the investigation, the paper reported.
