Minnesota man drives off leaving $205,950 after Tucumcari traffic stop.

Local police took $205,950 in custody after a routine traffic stop near the Love's truck stop in Tucumcari last week, while the driver who was carrying the money in the trunk of his car drove off with a citation, the Quay County Sun reported.

The man, a resident of Minnesota whose name was not released, ran a stop sign and failed to use a turn signal, and was cited but not arrested, the Sun reported.

After giving police permission to search his four-door sedan, the money was found in packages in the trunk, and Tucumcari Police Chief Roger Hatcher said in a news release that the money was tightly sealed in plastic and when the plastic was broken, it smelled like marijuana, according to the Sun.

Sgt. Darrick Shaw, who issued the citation, said the Minnesota man had been hired by an unknown person to drive the packages from Minnesota to El Paso, the Sun reported.

Because the money was abandoned, police took it into custody for safekeeping, but it will be up to the 10th Judicial District Court to determine where the money ends up, the paper said.

In the meantime, the money has been placed in an interest-bearing bank account in the name of both the Tucumcari Police Department and the district court, the Sun reported.
