60-year-old hospitalized after firing at sheriff and sheriff's sergeant last Friday.

David High, 60, is recovering from gunshot wounds to his legs at an El Paso hospital after firing at Luna County Sheriff Raymond Cobos and sheriff's Sgt. Joy Mullins Friday evening, the Deming Headlight reported.

Deputies were responding to a confrontation between a woman and a tenant at a Luna County residence around 7:30 p.m. Friday and were talking to the woman when they heard six shots ring out, the Headlight reported.

After the sheriff's Tactical Team was in place, High came out of the house once, yelling at his dog to stop barking, then came out again telling the officers to stop using a loudspeaker or he'd shoot, the paper said.

High fired one shot over Mullins' head, and team members took cover, the Headlight reported.

After yelling at Mullins again, High fired shots at Mullins and the sheriff, and three members of the Tactical Team returned fire, hitting High in the legs, according to the Headlight.

The three team members, who were not named, have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the paper said.

The New Mexico State Police have taken over the investigation and were interviewing sheriff's office personnel on Monday and will file any charges that might be brought against High, the Headlight reported.
