Notices being sent out to those whose names are on state's registry, KOB-TV reports.

People listed on the state's sex-offender registry will soon be receiving notices saying they are no longer welcome in Albuquerque's libraries, KOB-TV is reporting.

"We are in fact banning sex offenders from libraries in Albuquerque," Assistant City Attorney Greg Wheeler told Eyewitness News 4. "We know that in Albuquerque there have been sex offenders that have used our computers for cyber stalking."

Library officials are cross-referencing the library system's cardholder database with the state's sex-offender registry, and anyone who shows up on both lists will be sent a notice saying they are barred from city libraries, KOB-TV reported.

Any registered offender who does enter a library may be subject to arrest for trespassing, the station said.

Wheeler told KOB-TV that other cities have successfully banned sex offenders from public places like parks, so he said he's confident the library ban will withstand any legal challenge.
