Man had held off police for hours overnight at East Central motel.

8:55am UPDATE: We'd like to thank three e-mailers who contacted us within minutes of each other to question our earlier headline about the overnight SWAT standoff on East Central ending "peacefully."

We were still going along with what police first reported when the situation ended, but thanks to those alert readers, we were -- eventually -- able to bring you up to date.

We also got an anonymous e-mail from a person living next door to the Deluxe Inns and Suites in the 12000 block of Central NE who described hearing gunshots, but it came in before anyone got here.

Now, that's news (almost) as it happens.

Following hours of unsuccessful attempts at negotiation, firing teargas and sending a robot into a room at the Deluxe Inns and Suites in the 12000 block of Central NE, a man who held off police since around 9 p.m. Tuesday died this morning, KOB-TV is reporting.

Police earlier told reporters that the incident had ended "peacefully," but haven't yet released details about how the man died, Eyewitness News 4 reported.

KRQE News 13's Mike Paluska reported that he heard bangs and some sort of explosion just before 7 a.m., and that shortly after that, the man -- whose name hasn't been released -- was taken away in a gurney.

Paramedics worked to revive the man for about half an hour before he was pronounced dead, News 13 reported.

6:55am -- SWAT Situation Ends Peacefully: Armed man had holed up in an East Central motel for hours overnight.

The SWAT standoff with a man armed with two guns has just ended peacefully, Albuquerque police told KOB-TV

5:45am -- SWAT Standoff Continues This Morning: Armed man has been holed up in a Central Avenue motel for hours overnight.

Around 3 this morning, police blasted a hole in the door of a man who has been holed up at the Deluxe Inns and Suites at 12901 Central NE between Tramway and Juan Tabo, but the standoff continues at this hour, KOAT-TV is reporting this morning.

1:23am -- APD SWAT team in a standoff at this hour with an armed man.

Police were called to Deluxe Inn and Suites, 12901 Central NE, about 9 p.m. Tuesday by a man reporting that a security guard broke his camera, police spokesman John Walsh said. When they arrived, a man in a first floor room started acting "bizarre" and was upset over the broken camera. The officers were able to calm him down and left.

Moments later, the man called police acting “bizarre” again. This time when officers went to the hotel, the man broke a window with two handguns, one in each hand. One of the officers fired a “shot or two,” police spokesman John Walsh said.

No one has been injured. The man ran back into his room and refused to come out.

The initial officers backed off, sealed the area and called in the SWAT team. In the middle of the standoff, the man called the Journal, claiming police were going to shoot him if he left his hotel room.

The man told the Journal he is refusing to come out of his hotel room until he speaks to the State Police or FBI.
