Voters also OK Sunday liquor sales at bars and restaurants in Tuesday's election.

It was the second try for longtime Clovis Realtor Gayla Brumfield, but she won 36.6 percent of the vote in final, unofficial returns from Tuesday's municipal elections to become the city's first woman mayor, the Clovis News Journal reported this morning.

Brumfield will be sworn in Monday, following a canvass of the vote on Friday, and will replace outgoing Mayor David Lansford, who decided not to run this year after 12 years in office, the News Journal said.

In fact, it was Lansford who defeated Brumfield 12 years ago in the city's first mayoral election, the paper reported.

Before that, city commissioners picked the mayor, the News Journal said.

Also on Tuesday, more than 55 percent of 5,264 votes cast approved a measure to allow Sunday alcohol sales in the city's bars and restaurants, according to another News Journal story.

City Attorney Dave Richards told the paper it would be at least a month before bar and restaurant patrons could order the stronger stuff by-the-drink on Sundays.
