Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver will teach an online course at Clovis Community College.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver and former University of New Mexico football star Hank Baskett III will teach an eight-week sociology of sport course, beginning March 14, for Clovis Community College, the Clovis News Journal reported.

Baskett, a Clovis native, is in town for a few months between NFL seasons and was approached by Ruthie Hefner, chair of the college's sociology division, to see whether he was interested in teaching the online course, the News Journal said.

Baskett, a 2005 graduate of UNM with a degree in management, has no teaching experience, but Hefner said he brings the perspective of a professional athlete to a topic that is gaining popularity in colleges from coast to coast, the paper said.

"Hank brought about five of the eight units that are in that course, focused around the role of sports in society, sports and business, sports and violence ... but also the role of parents in the way they're pushing their children, and the role of the black athlete in society," Hefner told the News Journal.

Hefner said Baskett is the instructor of record, although she will assist in teaching some of the sociological aspects of the course, the News Journal said.
