Just as the third winter storm of March sweeps into N.M. this weekend.

1:10pm UPDATE: This just in -- USA Today founder Al Neuharth says in his weekend column that  Daylight Saving Time should be dumped, because it's "distressing, dangerous and a dollar drain" and doesn't save any energy.

And on Monday his six school-age children "will wake up in darkness, start their day dull, drag around through breakfast and school preparation, then head off to class in semi-darkness," all because of Daylight Saving Time, grumbles Neuharth.

You'll want to set that clock ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday night (who needs that extra hour of sleep, anyway?).

Meanwhile, a new winter storm -- the third of this still-young month of March -- is brewing over the north Pacific and will make landfall in the Pacific northwest today, moving rapidly south and east toward northern New Mexico on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow is expected to begin over the northern and western mountains late Saturday night, then spread east and south over the northeast highlands, the northeast plains and the central mountains, reaching the eastern plains by Sunday. There could be some significant snow falling on the higher elevations, the weather service said.

There's a slight chance of rain and snow in the Albuquerque area Saturday night, a better chance of a rain/snow mix on Sunday, and the possibility of snow overnight Sunday, according to the long-range forecast.

It's a chilly 26 right now in our neck of the woods, going up to a forecast high of 49 (well below the average high of 60 for this date). Saturday's high of 59 will be more like normal before dipping to around 50 on Sunday, according to the weather service.

It's only 14 above in Santa Fe at this hour (and 24 below zero in Angel Fire!), so enjoy the relatively mild springlike weather today before the next brush with winter.
