Was 37-year-old abducted, beaten and robbed? Or was it a day at the track?
Cynthia Manzanares, 37, of Las Cruces, was arrested last Thursday and charged with lying to police, who had conducted a five-day investigation into her claims that she had been kidnapped, beaten and robbed on March 1, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported. Instead, investigators learned that she had been at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino at the time her alleged ordeal took place, the Sun-News said. Initially, Manzanares told police she had been taken around 11 a.m. March 1 from a Wal-Mart parking lot and that the next thing she remembered was waking up around 7:30 p.m. that day out in the desert on the city's West Mesa, the paper reported. Manzanares also told police she had been beaten and that $860 had been taken from her, the Sun-News said. The woman submitted to medical exams and led investigators to the spot where she said she was taken, but investigators found out that Manzanares had really been at the track, the paper reported. When confronted with the evidence, she admitted she'd made up the abduction story, according to police. Manzanares was charged with making a false report, a misdemeanor, and released on a $1,000 bond, the paper said.
