James Griego, 21, of Bernalillo, was arrested early Sunday morning in a Las Cruces hotel parking lot in what police say was an attempted rape, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

A police officer on patrol noticed what appeared to be a physical altercation in the parking lot of the Ramada Palms on University Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Sunday and when the officer approached the man and woman, the man took off on foot, the Sun-News reported.

After a brief foot chase, Griego was apprehended, and an investigation found that he had been trying to sexually assault a 21-year-old woman, the paper said.

Griego was taken to the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a charge of attempted criminal sexual penetration, the Sun-News reported.

Griego also has a charge pending against him in Albuquerque in connection with the alleged breaking and entry into a woman's residence, police told the Sun-News.
