Girls' prep playoffs under way, boys begin today and Lady Lobos aim for the NCAA.

The girls' state tournament games got under way Tuesday with some surprises (no repeat of last year's Class 3A championship, as both Portales and Hope High fell in the quarterfinals), and the boys square off beginning at 9:45 this morning with a local matchup of La Cueva vs. Rio Rancho in Class 5A.

You'll want to watch the No. 14 Gallup boys' team, which knocked off No. 3 Highland last weekend, trying to keep up its spoiler role against No. 6 Mayfield at 8:15 tonight. Read about it all in this morning's Albuquerque Journal.

And you can watch the whole thing, live-streamed on NMAA.tv.

Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded University of New Mexico Lady Lobos tip off at 2:30 this afternoon in Las Vegas, Nev., against Brigham Young University in the first round of Mountain West Conference play.

You can catch it on KNML-AM 610 or The Mtn. (Comcast cable channel 276).

It'll be an uphill struggle for the Lady Lobos, who must win three straight games to make a seventh straight appearance at the NCAA Tournament, according to this morning's Albuquerque Journal
