Live-remote trucks from two El Paso stations try out city's new drag strip.

A drag race between two El Paso television stations' live-remote vans last Friday made the national news this week and was featured on CNN Wednesday, the El Paso Times reported.

The vans, worth about $500,000 each, belonged to KVIA Channel 7 and KDBC Channel 4, and their duel on a new drag strip east of El Paso was caught on tape, according to the Times.

(Note: If you watch the tape, you'll see that the KDBC van won!)

Charlie Bernal, the driver of the KDBC van, has been fired, while KVIA's photographer Richie Zamora and anchor Rick Cabrera are likely to face disciplinary action but won't be fired, KVIA general manager Kevin Lovell told The Associated Press.

Here's what the Times blog "Media Buzz" has to say about what multimedia editor Roy Ortega called "one of the most insipidly stupid blunders I've ever seen on El Paso TV."
