Termination proceedings under way for 20-year veteran of sheriff's office.

Santa Fe County sheriff's Sgt. James Naranjo, a 20-year veteran of the sheriff's office, has been placed on paid administrative leave after being accused of shoplifting, the office said today in a news release.

Naranjo was in uniform and on duty at the time of the alleged incident, and charges were brought by New Mexico State Police in Santa Fe Magistrate Court this morning, the release said.

Sheriff Greg Solano said in the release that he is "disappointed and dismayed about the incident and feels that should the deputy be guilty of the charges, it is an unfortunate black mark on law enforcement."

However, Solano said in the release, "it should not take away from the thousands of hard-working officers who serve the public every day."

In the meantime, Solano has begun termination proceedings against Naranjo, the release said.
