As many as 100 vehicles involved in wrecks near Flagstaff Sunday afternoon.

At least two people were killed Sunday afternoon in a series of wrecks that involved as many as 100 people and shut down a 19-mile stretch of Interstate 40 west of Flagstaff, the Arizona Republic reported.

Fierce winter weather was blamed for a series of 50 wrecks on I-40 in both directions, sending more than 30 people, some in critical condition, to hospitals and another 20 with injuries treated at the scene, the Republic reported.

The accidents were caused by people driving too fast during wintry conditions caused by a late-winter storm over northern Arizona, Sgt. Harold A. Sanders, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, told the Republic.

I-40 from milepost 171 to milepost 190 was shut down shortly after noon because of the accidents and low visibility due to heavy snow, the Republic said.

There were conflicting reports late Sunday whether there were two or three fatalities, with DPS initially reporting three and the Flagstaff Fire Department reporting two, the Republic reported.
