Carlsbad man accused of giving teen clothes for sex.

Monte C. Whitehead, 36, a Carlsbad veteriarian, was bound over for trial in state District Court on Tuesday on 52 counts of criminal sexual penetration and criminal sexual contact of a minor, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reported today on its Web site.

According to court records, Whitehead allegedly began showing pornographic photos and movies to the girl -- who is now 17 -- when she was 8 years old and began touching her on the outside of her clothes when she turned 13, the paper reported.

It was about a year later, police allege, that Whitehead began having sex with the girl two or three times a week for the next 1 1/2 years -- offering her clothes along with other gifts in exchange for sex and threatening her if she refused, according to the Current-Argus.

The alleged victim told police that Whitehead required her to use sex toys and told officers where to find the toys as well as "biological evidence" in Whitehead's home, the paper reported.

The suspect was charged with one criminal count for each week between Jan. 12, 2005, and Jan. 12, 2006, the Current-Argus said.

Whitehead turned himself in to the Eddy County Sheriff's Department in January, according to earlier reports.

The suspect, who is represented by Ruidoso attorney Gary Mitchell, was remanded to the Eddy County Detention Center where he is being held on a $1 million bond, the paper reported.
