But fire danger is picking up in Oklahoma.
The wildfires that have scorched nearly a million acres in the Texas Panhandle, killed 11 people and destroyed some 10,000 horses and cattle, appear to be under control this morning. Oklahoma seems to be bearing the brunt of new fires that broke out Wednesday, and even parts of western Kansas are burning, according to the latest report from The Associated Press. Video of the Texas fires is now available on AP's Online Video Network (sorry, unavailable on Macs, but with any PC using an Internet Explorer 6 or above browser). Shifting winds and low humidity -- along with parched shrubs and grasses -- are creating increased fire danger today across the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, according to a fire danger statement issued today by the National Weather Service. An outdoor burning ban remains in effect in the panhandles until further notice, and residents are advised to prepare for immediate evacuation to a safe zone in the event of a spreading wildfire, the weather service says. Fortunately for New Mexico, the wind seems to be pushing the fires north and east, but the potential for wildfires remains high on the state's eastern plains.
