ABQ ranks 66th and Santa Fe 75th in number of complaints nationwide.

The Federal Trade Commission reported Las Cruces was 25th among the nation's largest metropolitan areas in the number of identity theft complaints in 2007, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News .

The FTC's Consumer Fraud and Identity Theft Complaint Data report (pdf download), issued in February, said Las Cruces had 157 complaints per 100,000 resident in 2007, the Sun-News said.

Albuquerque was ranked 66th and Santa Fe 75th in number of complaints, the paper reported.

The report was not a survey but was based on "self-reported and unverified consumer complaints received by the FTC, according to the Sun-News.

That said, New Mexico was ninth among states for reported ID thefts with 87.5 per 100,000 residents, the Sun-News said.

The metro area with the highest number of reported complaints was Napa, Calif., while Arizona was the state with the most complaints, the Sun-News reported.
