Richardson takes a beating for backing Obama, but defends former president.
What's a would-be peacemaker to do? Gov. Bill Richardson was all over this morning's news shows, defending his endorsement last week of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and fending off criticism from informal Hillary Clinton adviser James Carville. Carville told The New York Times last week that Richardson's backing of Obama was "an act of betrayal" of the Clintons, after being appointed to high government posts by former President Bill Clinton. "Mr. Richardson's endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic," Carvile told the Times. When Clinton supporter, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, slyly introduced the Carville comment in a joint appearance with Richardson on Fox News Sunday, Richardson shot back, "I'm not going to get into the gutter like that." According to the United Press International, Richardson went on: "And you know, that's typical of many of the people around Senator Clinton. They think they have a sense of entitlement to the presidency." Also over the weekend, Richardson extended an olive branch of sorts to the Clintons, saying on the same Fox News Sunday show that he disagreed with a prominent Obama backer's comment that accused the former president of "McCarthyism" in appearing to question Obama's patriotism. "I don't believe President Clinton was implying that," said Richardson, according to The Associated Press. "But the point here ... is that the campaign has gotten too negative -- too many personal attacks, too much negativity that is not resounding with the public."
