Fire weather conditions especially critical from noon to 7 p.m. today.
An earlier fire weather watch for much of northern and central New Mexico has been upgraded to a red flag warning, in effect from noon to 7 p.m. today. All that red covering the New Mexico weather map shows the extent of the warning area, where humidities of 15 percent or lower will combine with 20 mph-plus winds and warm temperatures to create critical fire danger. A fire weather watch is still in effect from Thursday morning to Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service. 4:55am -- How Dry (and Warm and Windy) We Are: Fire weather watch posted for much of northern, central N.M. today and Thursday.A critical fire weather pattern will continue through the next few days as strong winds aloft combine with low humidities and unseasonably warm temperatures along and south of Interstate 40 and the Interstate 25 corridor between Las Vegas and Raton, the National Weather Service forecasts. A fire weather watch has been posted for those areas (including Albuquerque, the middle Rio Grande valley, the northeast and northwest highlands) from this afternoon through this evening and from Thursday morning through Thursday evening, the weather service said. We're looking at a high in the Albuquerque metro area today near 77 under sunny skies with a west wind of 5 to 10 mph, kicking up to between 15 and 20 mph, more of the same tonight and tomorrow. Winds could gust to 30 mph. The average high for this date in our area is just 65. Things could change on Friday, with a new front moving south and west over the eastern plains, with much cooler temperatures expected over the east (highs forecast in the 50s and 60s), according to this morning's forecast discussion.
