Methamphetamine, two small children found in North Valley home Wednesday.
The man shot to death early Wednesday at a North Valley home after brandishing a shotgun at officers executing a narcotics warrant has been identified as 40-year-old Lupe Fuentes Jr., the Albuquerque Journal reported this morning. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, a home on the 500 block of El Ensueno NE near Edith and Montano, Albuquerque Police Department spokesman John Walsh told the Journal. As of Wednesday night, police had recovered about a pound and a half of methamphetamine from the home, Walsh said. Two children, ages 9 and less than a year, were in the home at the time of the shooting, and four other people who were in the home were detained for questioning but not arrested, the Journal reported. The two officers who fired their weapons at Fuentes, Drew Bader and Shawn Higdon, have been placed on three-day paid administrative leave pending a multi-agency investigation of the shooting, Walsh told the Journal. Both men have 10 year-plus with APD, Walsh said. Fuentes had a criminal history dating back more than 20 years, including arrests and convictions for drug trafficking, larceny, DWI, domestic violence and other charges, and had a felony drug case pending in state District Court, according to court records.
9:20am 3/26/08 -- Man Killed After Pointing Weapon at Officers: Hispanic male in his 40s was shot around 6 a.m. at North Valley address. Albuquerque Police Department narcotics officers backed by the APD tactical team were executing a search warrant at a house on the 500 block of El Ensueno Road NE shortly after 6 this morning when a Hispanic male in his 40s pointed a long-barreled weapon at officers and two tactical team officers fired their weapons, killing the man, APD spokesman John Walsh told ABQjournal.com. The search warrant was related to methamphetamine, Walsh said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and four other people in the house were being detained for questioning at this hour, but no arrests have been made, Walsh told us. The officer-involved shooting is being reviewed by a multiagency team that includes APD, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, New Mexico State Police and the University of New Mexico Police Department under the supervision of the District Attorney's Office, Walsh said. The investigation is continuing at the scene, and the identity of the shooting victim has not been released, according to Walsh.
9:10am UPDATE: The Albuquerque Police Department's narcotics squad was serving a warrant at a North Valley home around 6 this morning when they were confronted by a man with a long-barreled weapon, KOB-TV reported.
8:30am UPDATE: The officer in this morning's officer-involved shooting is with the Albuquerque Police Department, APD spokesman John Walsh told ABQjournal.com. Walsh said the shooting occurred in the area of El Ensueno Road and Tokay Road. We'll let you know more details as we get them.
Breaking at 8:22am -- Officer-Involved Shooting in North Valley: One person shot and killed near Edith and Montano around 5 this morning. Albuquerque police and Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies are investigating an officer-involved shooting in which one person was shot and killed around 5 a.m. today on Muscatel Avenue, east of Edith Boulevard and north of Montano Road, KRQE News 13 is reporting. An officer -- it's whether it was an Albuquerque police officer or a sheriff's deputy -- was reportedly serving an arrest warrant when the shooting occurred, News 13 reported. Neighbors reported hearing something like explosions around 5 a.m., KRQE said. Dozens of units from both APD and the sheriff's department were on scene, including a SWAT unit, the station reported.
